Brit family gassed and robbed in camper van holiday in France after Jenson Button, Patrick Vieira and Richard Hammond suffer same fate

A HOLIDAYING family were gassed in their camper van by thieves who ransacked it while they were knocked out.

Perry Hudson, his partner Kim Heighway and their three children were targeted at the end of their stay in France.

They were parked in a service station when the raiders pumped gas into the vehicle and then helped themselves to £1,500-worth of belongings.

Kim, 31, said: “It’s terrifying that they were so close to us.

“They could have sliced our necks with a flick of their wrists if they’d wanted to.”

The family, from Redditch, Worcs, were the latest victims of gas-robbery, a crime said to be unique to France.

Landscape gardener Perry, 31, Kim and their children, Olivia, 15, Jacob, 12, and ten-year-old Charlie had driven the van through France to Spain for their summer hols.

They were heading back to catch the ferry home from Dieppe when they stopped at a service station in Antran, near Poitiers, to get some sleep.

Perry said: “Somehow the burglars pumped gas into the van through the air vents at the side, then broke in through the door and took loads of our stuff.

The scariest thing is that they must have been so close to us and the children

“When we woke up, we felt very groggy.

“Kim was completely gaga for a good hour or so.

“It’s the most frightening thing that’s ever happened to me.

“The scariest thing is that they must have been so close to us and the children.

“It was quite a small van, so they would have been practically nose-to-nose with my daughter when they opened the door.”

The family’s passports, Perry’s wallet, Kim’s designer handbag, medications and other valuables were taken.

UNABLE TO SLEEP

The only clue was CCTV of shadowy figures climbing a fence from neighbouring woods.

Recruitment consultant Kim added: “The police were really helpful and honest with us.

“They said they’d seen it plenty of times before.”

Their children were left badly shaken and Olivia was so shocked she has been unable to sleep properly since.

The family spoke out to warn other British tourists to be on their guard against a crime which appears to be on the increase.

Celebrity victims include ex-F1 driver Jenson Button and his then-wife Jessica Michibata, who lost jewellery worth £300,000 when raiders pumped gas into his villa in Saint-Tropez in 2015.

TV fashion gurus Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine, ex-Arsenal footballer Patrick Vieira and former Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond have also been victims.

In May last year, a pensioner and his grandsons were targeted after stopping at a truck stop in Montpellier.

And Pete Gosling, 26, and Lauren Hubbard, 27, fell prey to the gas robbers in March.

They had pulled over to sleep in their camper van near Marseille when thieves struck.
