Proposal for independent welfare advice

A commission would be established to review the amount Australians on welfare receive under a private member’s bill introduced to parliament.

Independent MP Cathy McGowan said her bill would create an independent social security commission to advise the government on the minimum level for welfare payments, for an acceptable standard of living.

“This bill will bring compassion and fairness to a really important system. It will provide independent, expert, and evidence-based advice on what is fair and adequate,” she told the lower house on Monday.
